- Recycle all the paper, plastic, glass, and metal products you can (you know those blue bins love to have them)
- Always put litter in its proper place - garbage cans or recycling bins
- Write or draw on both sides of a piece of paper before recycling it
- Make a printout from your computer only if you really need it
- Use sponges, rags, and cloth napkins instead of paper products
- Carry your lunch in a reusable box or bag
- Bike, walk, or ride the bus instead of using a car
- Make sure your car tires are properly inflated
- Replace burnt out bulbs at home with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs
- Turn off lights, computers, radios, and TV's when you leave a room
- Sit near a window when you read instead of turning on a light during the day
- Wash clothes in cold water and hang them out to dry (if you can)
- Don't use the dishwasher unless it's full
- Take short showers to save energy and water
- Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth
- Put leftover food in reusable containers, not in plastic wrap or foil
- Wash and reuse glass jars, plastic containers, and plastic tableware
- When shopping, look for items made out of recycled materials
- Take along reusable shopping bags
- Mend and repair clothes & toys instead of buying new ones
- Create a compost pile of food scraps & plant cuttings
- Buy food from local farmers markets
- Volunteer for community Earth-Care events, such as a clean up at the park
OK, so I may not do all of these but here's 23 ideas, try and do some and see a bit of a difference. We recycle at home and much less goes into the regular trash. Our school has a compost and we bring fruit/veggie stuff there and again, less trash.
